So they had this idea for a movie about guys racing cars really, really fast in illegal street races and then turning their driving skills to criminal pursuits by hijacking haulage trucks and stealing their cargo. I’m sure whoever read that script probably had a sinking feeling in their stomach but amazingly enough the idea translated really well onto the big screen and in turn helped create the now fading boy racer culture across Europe and elsewhere in the world.
But back to Fast and Furious the MMORPG. How do you take a street racing movie and covert it into a MMO that people will actually play? Well the creators of the game were really clever in that they appealed to the one thing that all petrol heads have in common – they love customizing their wheels. They’ve loved it since the first time they played with a Tonka truck or a Scalextric set. They want to mod, mod and then mod some more until the car bears only a passing resemblance to it’s former self.
And that’s exactly what this game offers the players. You have the ability to take your basic car chassis and choose from a dizzying range of parts and accessories to get the exact layout that you want – you get to build your very own 10-second car in other words.
But what use is this if you can’t prove just how hot your wheels really are? That’s where the MMO element kicks in because you then get to race your custom car against other players all over the world in the same street races you got to know and love in the movie. And you get to do all of this completely free of charge – as you’ve come to expect.
There are various race locations to enjoy and to progress to a new location you have to beat the current fastest car in the current location you’re racing in. This is where you need to be careful with your resources – if your car takes too much damage you can’t achieve top speed so you’re not going to be able to move to the next location. Plus each race you participate in gives you a Heat score and if this heads over 50% then you’re going to wind up getting busted by the cops.
So it’s more than just picking the best parts and going really fast – you need to out think your opponents too.
Why not live your life a quarter-mile at a time like the real racers do?
