There has always been a huge following for futuristic, sci-fi PC games. The ability to explore new galaxies, colonize new planets, go to war with various alien races and generally goof around in space appeals to many people for a variety of reasons.
However, every science fiction fan has a slightly different viewpoint on how the future will look. Some prefer the idea of exploring the galaxy, while others far prefer the ideal of super-computers taking over Earth. For this reason, not all science fiction PC games will suit all gamers. In fact, it may be worth doing a little research into which games might suit your own particular preferences first.
Here are some of the best games available for this genre:
Mass Effect 2
This stunning game is the absolute ultimate science-fiction fan’s dreams come true. It’s a mash-up of every sci fi TV show you’ve ever watched, put all into the same game. It’s highly customizable, so you can choose to be Captain Picard, or Commander Ryker, or even Mal Reynolds if you’re a complete Firefly fan.
Of course, your aim is to save the Universe from a stack of marauding aliens, but how you choose to do it is completely up to you. Turn the game into a mad, violent shooting spree between enemies, or really play up the strategy tactics and see if you can make friends and gain allies instead.
At it’s most basic level, this game offers stunning graphics that allow a gamer to become immersed in the game world, but it’s also a fun, engrossing “choose your own adventure” type of game.
StarCraft
StarCraft is easily the most popular sci fi game of all time. Blizzard understand how to create a strong strategy game, but when you set it in a futuristic setting and pit aliens against players for supremacy of territories, it starts to get interesting.
Deus Ex 3
This futuristic role-playing game stems right from the dystopian cyberpunk era and plays a little like a strange cross between The Matrix and Blade Runner. It’s dark and a little dirty, but it allows game players to explore a world gone wrong, where computers and micro-technology can build a person up to amazing levels, even while the rest of the world is dying from a nasty plague.
Fallout 3
There’s just something about people wanting to see a bleak, barren future where someone has pressed the button and obliterated the world. So that’s what they did in Fallout 3. The world has been nuked and players must find a way to survive. Of course, not everyone remaining in this game is trying to survive. Some simply want to shoot at you or loot things. The draw card in this game is the ability to choose your style of game play. Opt between strategy-style play and straight-out shooter game mode.
No matter what your preference for sci fi gaming might be, you’re sure to find something that appeals to you and your vision of what the future might hold.
